Blu-ray Sales: January 2-9: Love and Monsters Has the Heart to Top the Charts

For the week that ended on January 9th, Paramount Home Media Distribution's Love and Monsters topped both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts. The post-apocalyptic adventure about one man's quest to reunite with his girlfriend was originally meant to have a wide theatrical release in February 2021, but like so many movies in recent months, those plans were changed by the coronavirus pandemic, and Paramount ended up giving the film a limited theatrical release in October 2020 instead, where it managed to bring in over $1 million at the box office and received positive reviews. Love and Monsters had an HD share of 56% and 15% of units sold were from the 4K UHD format.

Sliding down to number two on both charts in its fourth week is Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's Tenet. Christopher Nolan's epic action-adventure was also released theatrically in 2020, but despite its massive budget and the director's loyal fanbase, even Tenet had to contend with the pandemic and a summer season that saw theaters closed or at limited capacity, instead of pushing blockbuster films to potentially billion-dollar grosses. Clearly, however, the appetite for seeing Tenet at home is still strong, as the film sold 82% as many units as Love and Monsters, with an HD share of 64% and 26% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Also dropping one spot on both charts this week is Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's Honest Thief. The latest Liam Neeson action thriller was released on the same day as Love and Monsters, even playing in IMAX locations on its way to making $14 million domestically. This week, Honest Thief sold 37% as many units as Love and Monsters, with an HD share of 37%.
