For the week that ended on January 2nd, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's
Tenet topped both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts for the third week in a row. The sci-fi action epic, which cost an estimated $200 million, was intended to come out in July 2020 and dominate the box office. Then the coronavirus pandemic happened. Theaters were closed worldwide with the release of the film only months away. Eventually, the decision was made to release
Tenet overseas in late August, with a US release close behind in early September. Unfortunately, that strategy didn't produce the results everyone was hoping for, at least domestically, where
Tenet made just $57.9 million. Things look a bit better for the film internationally, however where it has made over $300 million. No doubt driven by fan anticipation, particularly in areas where movie theaters were (and perhaps still are) closed, in its third week
Tenet had an HD share of 66% and 26% of units sold were from the 4K UHD format.
Next up at number two on both charts is Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's
Honest Thief. The latest Liam Neeson action thriller was one of the few films to get a wide theatrical release late in 2020, even playing in IMAX locations on its way to making $14 million domestically.
Honest Thief sold 44% as many units as
Tenet, with an HD share of 42%.
Finally, at number three on the Blu-ray-only charts is Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's
Harry Potter: 8-Film Collection. This week, the collection actually moved up one spot from where it was last week. The
Harry Potter: 8-Film Collection sold 60% as many units as
Tenet, with an HD share of 55%, of which 6% came from the 4K UHD format.
