Blu-ray Sales: December 19-26: Tenet Goes Back and Does It Again

For the week that ended on December 26th, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's Tenet again topped both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts. The sci-fi action epic, which cost an estimated $200 million, was intended to come out in July 2020 and dominate the box office. Then the coronavirus pandemic happened. Theaters were closed worldwide with the release of the film only months away. Eventually, the decision was made to release Tenet overseas in late August, with a US release close behind in early September. Unfortunately, that strategy didn't produce the results everyone was hoping for, at least domestically, where Tenet made just $57.9 million. Things look a bit better for the film internationally, however where it has made over $300 million. No doubt driven by fan anticipation, particularly in areas where movie theaters were (and perhaps still are) closed, Tenet continued to beat out several holiday favorites over the Christmas holiday, although its Blu-ray sales understandably dipped from its first week of release. Tenet had an HD share of 71% and 28% of units sold were from the 4K UHD format.

Next up at number two on both charts for the second consecutive week is Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. The 1989 sequel was the third installment of the Vacation franchise starring Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo as Clark and Ellen Griswold, and thirty years on, it has become a classic holiday comedy, fitting nicely between those films aimed at children, like Dr. Seuss' The Grinch and more mature fare, like Bad Santa. This week, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation sold 34% as many units as Tenet, with an HD share of 36%.

Finally, at number three on the Blu-ray-only chart is Walt Disney Home Entertainment's Mulan (2020). Disney's live-action remake of its 1998 animated film, about a girl in ancient China who goes into battle disguised as a male, topped the charts on its release week and even as recently as the week of December 12th. Mulan sold 28% as many units as Tenet, with an HD share of 53%, of which 9% came from the 4K UHD format.
