For the week that ended on December 19th, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's
Tenet took the top spots on both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts. The sci-fi action epic, which cost an estimated $200 million, was intended to come out in July 2020 and dominate the box office. Then the coronavirus pandemic happened. Theaters were closed worldwide with the release of the film only months away. Eventually, the decision was made to release
Tenet overseas in late August, with a US release close behind in early September. Unfortunately, that strategy didn't produce the results everyone was hoping for, at least domestically, where
Tenet made just $57.9 million. Things look a bit better for the film internationally, however where it has made over $300 million. No doubt driven by fan anticipation, particularly in areas where movie theaters were (and perhaps still are) closed,
Tenet beat out several holiday favorites in the week leading up to the Christmas holiday.
Tenet had an HD share of 82% and 46% of units sold were from the 4K UHD format.
Next up at number two on both charts is Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. The 1989 sequel was the third installment of the
Vacation franchise starring Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo as Clark and Ellen Griswold, and thirty years on, it has become a classic holiday comedy, fitting nicely between those films aimed at children, like
Dr. Seuss' The Grinch and more mature fare, like
Bad Santa. Again, though it came in second place on both packaged media charts,
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation sold just 17.5% as many units as
Tenet, with an HD share of 37%.
Finally, at number three on the Blu-ray-only chart is Universal Studios Home Entertainment's
Dr. Seuss' The Grinch. The CGI animated film, an adaptation of the classic Seuss Christmas story about how the grumpy Grinch plots to ruin Christmas for the happy Whos of Whoville, features Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice of the Grinch, and is the third version of the story for the screen, and the second for Universal. In its theatrical release, the film made over $500 million, and it continues to make money still via the home video circuit, where various Blu-ray editions of the film are often seen high on the video charts.
Dr. Seuss' The Grinch sold 16.7% as many units as
Tenet, with an HD share of 44%, of which 4% came from the 4K UHD format.
