Blu-ray Sales: November 28-December 5: One 4K Box Set to Rule Them All

For the week that ended on December 5th, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy took the top spot on the Blu-ray-only charts, Peter Jackson's fantasy trilogy has seen several releases on Blu-ray, most recently in the form of a 4K UHD box set containing both the theatrical and extended versions of the films. The feat is especially impressive given that this particular edition contains only 4K discs, no 1080p Blu-ray discs, extras or even audio commentaries. The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy had an HD share of 93% and 83% of units sold were from the 4K UHD format.

As an aside, fans may be surprised to learn that the simultaneous 4K disc release of The Hobbit: The Motion Picture Trilogy only brought that title to seventh place, putting it below some seasonal favorites as we enter the home stretch of the holiday season. The Hobbit: The Motion Picture Trilogy sold 41% as many units as The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy, with an HD share of 79% and 63% of units sold were from the 4K UHD format.

In second place on the Blu-ray-only charts, it's that boy wizard again: Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's Harry Potter: 8-Film Collection. This week, the collection actually moved up one spot from where it was last week. The Harry Potter: 8-Film Collection sold 60% as many units as The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy, with an HD share of 55%, of which 6% came from the 4K UHD format.

Rounding out the top three is Walt Disney Home Entertainment's Mulan (2020). The film, an adaptation of an ancient Chinese tale about a girl who goes into battle disguised as a male, is one of Disney's many recent live-action remakes of its classic and hit animated films of the 20th century. Initially planned for a worldwide theatrical release in March 2020, Mulan instead ended up with only a digital release domestically, as well as a limited theatrical release overseas. However, that didn't stop sales of the film on Blu-ray, as the film, which was released on both Blu-ray and 4K UHD Blu-ray, topped the charts on its release week back in early November. This week, Mulan sold 53% as many units as The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy, with an HD share of 56%, of which 10% came from the 4K UHD format.
