Blu-ray Sales: November 7-14: Mulan Battles to the Top of the Charts

For the week that ended on November 14th, Walt Disney Home Entertainment's Mulan (2020) topped both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts. The film, an adaptation of an ancient Chinese tale about a girl who goes into battle disguised as a male, is one of Disney's many recent live-action remakes of its classic and hit animated films of the 20th century. It was initially planned to have a worldwide theatrical release in late March 2020, but after a gala Hollywood premiere, the coronavirus pandemic hit in mid-March and scuppered those plans. Instead, Mulan debuted as a Premium VOD title in September, in conjunction with a limited theatrical release overseas. Then, in a matter of days earlier this month, Disney both announced and released the film on home video, including Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. In spite of its unusual release, enthusiasm for Mulan on Blu-ray certainly wasn't dampened, with the remake garnering an HD share of 72% and 10% of units sold being in the 4K UHD format.

Next up, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's Harry Potter: 8-Film Collection took the number-two spots on both the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales charts. The boy wizard's film series has raked in billions at the box office, and in a demonstration of its staying power, the complete series boxed set rose back up the charts again after having topped them most recently just last month. The Harry Potter: 8-Film Collection sold 37% as many units as Mulan, with an HD market share of 61% and 6% of units sold on the UHD format.

Finally, in third place on the Blu-ray-only chart is Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's Jumanji: The Next Level. The third installment in the Jumanji franchise grossed over $800 million worldwide from a theatrical release in December 2019, and didn't stop until it, too, was shut out of the theater by the pandemic. Jumanji: The Next Level sold 23% as many units as Mulan, with an HD market share of 64% and 1% of units sold on the UHD format.
