Father's Day may still be a few weeks away, but that hasn't stopped studios from flooding the market with male targeted films. Universal is taking their turn today, releasing four catalog titles that are sure to appeal to a good number of high definition fathers out there, including '
Children of Men', '
Cinderella Man', '
Field of Dreams', and '
Seabiscuit'.
Of the four, 'Children of Men' stands out for more than just being the only non-sports related film of the bunch. This dystopia film explores a world on the brink of destruction after two decades of human infertility. After narrowly escaping a coffee shop bombing, Theo (Clive Owen), a former activist for refugee rights, gets kidnapped by an activist group called the "Fishes". There, his former wife and leader of the group Julian Taylor (Julianne Moore) energies him to use his connections to help obtain permits to lawfully transfer a young girl. He soon discovers that he will not only have to escort the girl, but also that she is pregnant with the only known child in existence.
What makes the film so appealing is also the aspects which make it such a great Blu-ray disc. The film style dictates a very gritty look which is shot very close to the action. The result is a highly detailed video transfer with a booming soundtrack. In fact, the soundtrack reminded me a war film akin to 'Band of Brothers' with how encompassing it can be.
Sony today releases '
The Sky Crawlers' from acclaimed director Mamoru Oshii of 'Ghost in the Shell' fame while Lionsgate provides the Renee Zellweger and Harry Connick, Jr. film '
New In Town' to Blu-ray. Warner is releasing '
True Romance', the extended cut of '
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves', and digibook release of the Michael Douglas' '
Falling Down'.
