Blu-ray Sales, August 30-September 5: Beetlejuice Scares Up Home Media

For the week that ended on September 5th, Warner Home Entertainment's Beetlejuice took at the number-one spot on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales charts. Director Tim Burton's comedy about two recently deceased ghosts (Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin) trying to scare a family of New York yuppies (Catherine O'Hara, Jeffrey Jones, and Winona Ryder) - and the way their efforts intersect with Michael Keaton's disgusting "bio-exorcist" from whom the film takes its title - was a surprise hit back in 1988, and it recently received a new 4K remaster on home media. This week, Beetlejuice had a great HD market share of 85%

Next up on the Blu-ray-only sales ranking was another Warner title: Richard Donner's The Goonies. This classic children's adventure was a huge success for Donner and executive producer Steven Spielberg back in 1985, and its cult has only increased in the subsequent decades. For its thirty-fifth anniversary, The Goonies, like Beetlejuice, received a new 4K transfer. The Goonies had a terrific Blu-ray market share of 78% and sold 70% as many Blu-rays as Beetlejuice. On the overall package-media chart, the film came in sixth place; there, Trolls World Tour took second place and sold 85% as many total units as Beetlejuice.

Finally, Marvel and Walt Disney Home Entertainment's Black Panther rounded out the top three on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. Another superhero entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Black Panther was a massive success with both critics and audiences following its February premiere. Critics largely adored the film (note its robust 88% favorability rating on Metacritic), and viewers were just as supportive, turning out to the film to the tune of a $1.3-billion worldwide gross on top of its estimated $205-million production budget. Black Panther had an HD market share of 53% and sold 51% as many Blu-rays and 82% as many total units as Beetlejuice.
