Warner Home Video has announced that it will release the theatrical cut of the dark thriller 'Payback' on Blu-ray in
Germany, Spain and
the United Kingdom on August 21, August 25 and September 21, respectively. Video will be presented in 1080p VC-1 accompanied by a Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. No information on region coding is available, but Warner Bros. doesn't usually apply region locking on its releases.
Extras have now been detailed by Spanish site
ZonaDVD and include:
- Commentary by writer/director Brian Helgeland
- Interviews with Mel Gibson, Maria Bello, Lucy Liu and James Coburn
- Paybacks are a B*tch: making-of documentary
- Same Story - Different Movie: Creating 'Payback: The Director's Cut'
- A Conversation with Author Donald E. Westlake

Payback' had already been released in the US by Paramount. However, that edition only included the "Straight Up" director's cut, which is very different from the theatrical cut in its look, tone and plot (especially in the third act). Some viewers actually preferred the theatrical cut, with its ironic film-noir slant, its bluish color palette, and Kris Kristofferson as a villain.
At any rate, the European edition by Warner (which holds the rights to the movie in this territory) seems to be a winner, as it will include both cuts of the movie. Besides, it will feature a lossless audio track which was absent from all previous high-definition releases of this movie.
'Payback' is already up for preorder on
Amazon UK but not yet on Amazon Germany.
