Blu-ray Sales, July 19-25: Scoob Solves the Mystery of Disc Sales

For the week that ended on July 25th, Warner Home Entertainment's Scoob debuted at Number One on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales charts. A CGI-animated rebootquel (and stealth opener in a Hanna Barbara-shared universe) of the beloved Mystery Machine crew, Scoob also had its release impacted by the coronavirus. The film, which received low-to-mediocre critical reactions (it has a 43% approval rating on Metacritic), received its largest theatrical rollout overseas, where it earned roughly $5.7 million, before arriving on VOD and HBOMax in North America. This week, Scoob had an HD market share of 46%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings was DreamWorks and Universal Studios Home Media Entertainment's Trolls World Tour. This sequel to the hit 2016 animated comedy became unexpectedly controversial during its release last April. The film, which netted mediocre reviews (it has a 50% approval rating on Metacritic), became Universal Studios' biggest high-profile foray into the world of day-and-date VOD premieres, a move that made the film the "most successful day-one rental" (to date, VOD sales have accounted for a $95-million gross on top of Trolls's estimated $90-110-million production budget) and drew the ire of AMC Theaters, which said they would stop theatrically screening Universal releases (just this week, AMC has relented, though). Trolls had a Blu-ray market share of 52% and sold 61% as many Blu-rays and 54% as many total units as Scoob.

Finally, Warner's Batman Beyond: The Complete Series collection rounded out the top three on the Blu-ray-only list. This set - which includes all three seasons of the show as well as Return of the Joker - had a Blu-ray market share of 96% and sold 20% as many Blu-rays as Scoob. In terms of the overall package-media list, the series package came in ninth place and sold 10% as many total units as the Scooby Doo reboot.
