Blu-ray Sales, June 28-July 4: Sonic Struggles Against Force of Nature

For the week that ended on July 4th, Paramount Home Media Distribution's Sonic the Hedgehog held the number-one spot on the Blu-ray-only chart. A live-action adaptation of the popular video game, Sonic struggled with critics but entertained audiences during its release last February. The film scored mediocre reviews (it has a 47% approval rating on Metacritic), but it grossed $306 million at the worldwide box office on top of its estimated $81-95-million production budget. This week, Sonic had an HD market share of 50%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only sales ranking was Lionsgate Home Entertainment's Force of Nature. Director Michael Polish's action-thriller went straight to VOD this year (despite its $23 million budget) as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. During its home-media release, the film received poor reviews (note its 29% rating on Metacritic). Force of Nature had a Blu-ray market share of 39% and sold 99% as many Blu-rays as Sonic the Hedgehog. Regarding the overall package-media list, the film came in first place, and Sonic sold 79% as many total units as it.

Finally, Pixar and Walt Disney Home Entertainment's Onward rounded out the top three on the Blu-ray-only sales list. This family-friendly entertainment was one of Pixar's least financially successful films when it premiered in March. While the film received decent reviews (it has a 60% rating on Metacritic), it had the greater misfortune of opening just before global lockdowns swept the country; as a result, it only grossed $103 million at the worldwide box office on top of its estimated $175-200-million production budget. Onward had a Blu-ray market share of 49% and sold 77% as many Blu-rays as Sonic the Hedgehog. On the overall package-media list, the film came in fourth place - behind Top Gun - and sold 62% as many total units as Force of Nature.
