Blu-ray Sales, June 21-27: Sonic Zooms Back to Number One

For the week that ended on June 27th, Paramount Home Media Distribution's Sonic the Hedgehog reclaimed the number-one spot on both the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. A live-action adaptation of the popular video game, Sonic struggled with critics but entertained audiences during its release last February. The film scored mediocre reviews (it has a 47% approval rating on Metacritic), but it grossed $306 million at the worldwide box office on top of its estimated $81-95-million production budget. This week, Sonic had an HD market share of 55%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only sales ranking was Pixar and Walt Disney Home Entertainment's Onward. This family-friendly entertainment was one of Pixar's least financially successful films when it premiered in March. While the film received decent reviews (it has a 60% rating on Metacritic), it had the greater misfortune of opening just before global lockdowns swept the country; as a result, it only grossed $103 million at the worldwide box office on top of its estimated $175-200-million production budget. Onward had a good Blu-ray market share of 60% and sold 86% as many Blu-rays as Sonic the Hedgehog. Regarding the overall package-media list, the film came in third place - behind Top Gun - and sold 80% as many total units as the Sega-inspired adventure.

Finally, Universal Studios Home Entertainment's 1917 rounded out the top three on the Blu-ray-only sales list. Director Sam Mendes' technically impressive WWI saga, 1917 was a strong performer for Universal following its December release. The film scored good critical reactions (it has a 78% approval rating on Metacritic), and it then went on to gross almost $368 million worldwide on top of its estimated $90-to-$100-million production budget. 1917 had a solid Blu-ray market share of 62% and sold 75% as many Blu-rays as Sonic the Hedgehog. On the overall package-media list, the film came in fourth place and sold 67% as many total units as Sonic.
