Blu-ray Sales, June 14-20: Birds of Prey Soar over Star Wars and Sonic

For the week that ended on June 20th, Warner Home Entertainment's Birds of Prey reclaimed the number-one spot on the Blu-ray-only chart. The Harley Quinn-centric spin-off to the controversial 2016 actioner Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey struggled to connect with both critics and audiences. The film scored okay reviews (it has a 60% approval rating on Metacritic), and it grossed $82 million at the domestic box office on top of its estimated $82-100-million production budget. This week, Birds of Prey had a strong HD market share of 70%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only sales ranking was Lucasfilm and Walt Disney Home Entertainment's Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker. The controversial finale to the "Skywalker Saga," The Rise of Skywalker made a big box-office splash following its December release. Yes, the film scored mediocre critical notices (it has a 53% approval rating on Metacritic), but it still grossed over $1 billion worldwide on top of its estimated $275-million production budget. The Rise of Skywalker had a very good Blu-ray market share of 67% and sold 88% as many Blu-rays as Birds of Prey. Regarding the overall package-media list, the film came in third place (behind Birds of Prey, actually) and sold 88% as many total units as that list's top seller: Sonic the Hedgehog.

Finally, Paramount Home Media Distribution's Sonic the Hedgehog rounded out the top three on the Blu-ray-only sales list. A live-action adaptation of the popular video game, Sonic struggled with critics but entertained audiences during its release last February. The film scored mediocre reviews (it has a 47% approval rating on Metacritic), but it grossed $306 million at the worldwide box office on top of its estimated $81-95-million production budget. Sonic had a Blu-ray market share of 53% and sold 79% as many Blu-rays and overall units as Birds of Prey. On that overall package-media list, the film came in first place, as previously mentioned.
