For the week that ended on June 13th, Paramount Home Media Distribution's
Sonic the Hedgehog once again took the number-one spot on both the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts - it's been at the top for four weeks now. A live-action adaptation of the popular video game,
Sonic struggled with critics but entertained audiences during its release last February. The film scored mediocre reviews (it has a
47% approval rating on Metacritic), but it grossed
$306 million at the worldwide box office on top of its estimated $81-95-million production budget. This week,
Sonic had an HD market share of 50%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings was Universal Studios Home Entertainment's
The Hunt. Director Craig Zobel's violent satire arrived in theaters last March on a wave of controversy - the studio delayed its U.S. release in 2019, largely because the President found its subject matter objectionable - but couldn't turn that advance buzz into critical or commercial success. The film got mediocre reviews (it has a
50% rating on Metacritic), and it went on to gross
$8 million at the domestic box office on top of its modest $14-million production budget.
The Hunt had a Blu-ray market share of 51% and sold 90% as many Blu-rays and overall units as
Sonic the Hedgehog. On that overall package-media list, the film came in third place behind another controversial title:
Gone with the Wind, which also found itself at the center of a political imbroglio after HBOMax announced that it would temporarily be pulling the title from its streaming service (the film is slated to return, however, alongside a series of documentary materials designed to place its subject matter in context).
Finally, Warner Home Entertainment's
Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) rounded out the top three on the Blu-ray-only sales list. The Harley Quinn-centric spin-off to the controversial 2016 actioner
Suicide Squad,
Birds of Prey struggled to connect with both critics and audiences. The film scored okay reviews (it has a
60% approval rating on Metacritic), and it grossed
$82 million at the domestic box office on top of its estimated $82-100-million production budget.
Birds of Prey had a Blu-ray market share of 59% and sold 82% as many Blu-rays as
Sonic the Hedgehog. Regarding the overall package-media list, the film came in fourth place, where it sold 71% as many total units as the Sega-inspired adventure.
