For the week that ended on May 23rd, Paramount Home Media Distribution's Sonic the Hedgehog debuted at the number-one spot on both the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. A live-action adaptation of the popular video game, Sonic struggled with critics but entertained audiences during its release last February. The film scored mediocre reviews (it has a 47% approval rating on Metacritic), but it grossed $306 million at the worldwide box office on top of its estimated $81-95-million production budget. This week, Sonic had a solid HD market share of 62%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only sales ranking was Pixar and Walt Disney Home Entertainment's Onward. This family-friendly entertainment was one of Pixar's least financially successful films when it premiered in March. While the film received decent reviews (it has a 60% rating on Metacritic), it had the greater misfortune of opening just before global lockdowns swept the country; as a result, it only grossed $103 million at the worldwide box office on top of its estimated $175-200-million production budget. Onward had a very good Blu-ray market share of 68% and sold 71% as many Blu-rays as Sonic the Hedgehog. Regarding the overall package-media list, the film sold 65% as many total units as the Sega-inspired adventure.

Finally, Warner Home Entertainment's Justice League Dark: Apokolips War rounded out the top three on the Blu-ray-only sales list. This R-rated animated adventure takes inspiration from the popular DC Comics characters in Justice League Dark - and the brutal villain Darkseid. Apokolips War had a terrific HD market share of 100% and sold 44% as many Blu-rays as Sonic. On the overall package-media list, the film came in fourth place (behind Birds of Prey) and sold 27% as many total units as the Sonic film.
