Blu-ray Sales, April 19-25: Bad Boys Live at Number One

For the week that ended on April 25th, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's Bad Boys for Life took the number-one spot on both the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. The highest grossing film of 2020, Bad Boys for Life was a hit with audiences following its January release. Yes, the film didn't get the best reviews (it has a 59% approval rating on Metacritic), it still grossed over $419 million worldwide on top of its estimated $90-million production budget. This week, Bad Boys for Life had an HD market share of 54%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings was Lucasfilm and Walt Disney Home Entertainment's Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker. The controversial finale to the "Skywalker Saga," The Rise of Skywalker made a big box-office splash following its December release. While the film scored mediocre critical notices (it has a 53% approval rating on Metacritic), it still grossed over $1 billion worldwide on top of its estimated $275-million production budget. The Rise of Skywalker had a strong Blu-ray market share of 71% and sold 45% as many Blu-rays and 35% as many total units as Bad Boys for Life.

Finally, Universal Studios Home Entertainment's The Gentlemen rounded out the top three on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. Director Guy Ritchie's return to the crime-comedy milieu that made him famous was a sleeper hit for its distributors last January. The film got middling critical plaudits (it has a 51% approval rating on Metacritic) and then grossed $115 million worldwide on top of its estimated $20-million production budget. The Gentlemen had a good HD market share of 63% and sold 17% as many Blu-rays as Bad Boys for Life. Regarding the overall package-media list, the film sold 14% as many total units as the Bad Boys sequel.
