Blu-ray Sales, February 2-8: Doctor Sleep Shines on Home Media

For the week that ended on February 8th, Warner Home Entertainment's Doctor Sleep debuted at the number-one spot on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. Director Mike Flanagan's sequel to Stanley Kubrick's iconic chiller The Shining, Doctor Sleep underperformed for its distributors. The film got okay critical responses (it has a 59% approval rating on Metacritic), and it then grossed just over $72 million worldwide on top of its estimated $45-to-55-million production budget. This week, Doctor Sleep had a very strong HD market share of 70%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings was Paramount Home Media Distribution's Terminator: Dark Fate. Yet another attempt to try and kickstart the Terminator franchise, Dark Fate ultimately struggled to connect with critics and audiences. The film netted largely mediocre critical reviews (it has a 54% approval rating on Metacritic), and it then grossed just over $62 million on top of its estimated $185-to-196-million production budget. Dark Fate had a Blu-ray market share of 59% and sold 62% as many Blu-rays and 73% as many total units as the Shining sequel.

Finally, another Paramount title - Playing with Fire - rounded out the top three on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. This family-friendly firefighter comedy was a modest success for its distributors. Despite fairly poor critical notices (it has a 24% approval rating on Metacritic), it earned $64 million worldwide on top of its estimated $30-million production budget. Playing with Fire had an HD market share of 51% and sold 46% as many Blu-rays and 63% as many total units as Doctor Sleep.
