Blu-ray Sales, January 12-18: Maleficient Soars Above Joker

For the week that ended on January 18th, Walt Disney Home Entertainment's Maleficent: Mistress of Evil debuted at Number One on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. This belated sequel (the first Maleficent came out in 2014) underperformed domestically relative to its more successful predecessor. Mistress of Evil scored lower-than-average critical marks (it has a 43% approval rating on Metacritic), and then it earned just under $114 million domestically on top of its estimated $185-million production budget. This week, Mistress of Evil had a strong HD market share of 75%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings was Warner Home Entertainment's Joker. One of the year's most divisive, controversial features, this violent character study of the Crown Prince of Crime was a major hit following its October premiere. Despite fairly mixed critical notices (it has a 58% approval rating on Metacritic), it still earned over $1 billion worldwide on top of its estimated $55-70-million production budget and received eleven Oscar nominations, including Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Picture. Joker had a solid Blu-ray market share of 64% and sold 53% as many Blu-rays and 62% as many total units as the Maleficent sequel.

Finally, Paramount Home Media Distribution's Gemini Man rounded out the top three on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. Director Ang Lee second big-screen experiment with High Frame Rate photography (after Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk), this high-concept Will Smith thriller struggled to connect with either critics or audiences. The film netted poor critical notices (note its Metacritic score of 38%, for example), and it made just $48.5 million domestically on top of its estimated $173-million production budget. Gemini Man had a decent HD market share of 60% and sold 30% as many Blu-rays and 38% as many total units as Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.
