Blu-ray Sales, January 5-11: Joker Terrorizes Home Media Charts

For the week that ended on January 11th, Warner Home Entertainment's Joker remained at the number-one spot on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. One of the year's most divisive, controversial features, this violent character study of the Crown Prince of Crime was a major hit following its October premiere. Despite fairly mixed critical notices (it has a 58% approval rating on Metacritic), it still earned over $1 billion worldwide on top of its estimated $55-70-million production budget and received eleven Oscar nominations, including Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Picture. This week, Joker had a similarly strong HD market share of 73%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings was Lionsgate Home Entertainment's Rambo: Last Blood. Ostensibly the final feature in Sylvester Stallone's Rambo franchise, this action-thriller was a modest commercial hit after its September premiere. Despite fairly toxic critical notices (it has a 26% approval rating on Metacritic), it still earned $91 million on top of its estimated $50-million production budget. Last Blood had a Blu-ray market share of 49% and sold 7% as many Blu-rays and 10% as many total units as Joker.

Finally, A24 and Lionsgate's The Lighthouse rounded out the top three on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. Director Robert Eggers' bizarre follow-up to his acclaimed The Witch has proven to be one of 2019's biggest indie sensations. The film netted rapturous critical notices (note its Metacritic score of 83%, for example), and it made over $13 million on top of its modest $4-million production budget. The Lighthouse had a very good HD market share of 72% and sold 7% as many Blu-rays and total units as Joker.
