For the week that ended on August 24th, Marvel and Walt Disney Home Entertainment's
Avengers: Endgame remained at number one on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. The MCU's massive, three-hour conclusion to eleven years of cinematic serialized narratives,
Endgame did well with both critics and audiences last April. The film scored good critical notices (it has a
78% rating on Metacritic), and it ended up grossing
almost $2.8 billion worldwide on top of its estimated $356-million production budget. This week,
Endgame had a strong Blu-ray market share of 75%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings was Warner Home Entertainment's
Detective Pikachu. This sci-fi family adventure - which stars Ryan Reynolds as the title character - was a modest success following its release last May. The film scored so-so critical notices (it has a
53% rating on Metacritic), and it ended up grossing
$144 million domestically on top of its estimated $150-million production budget, although the film did much better overseas, grossing $287 million internationally.
Detective Pikachu had a Blu-ray market share of 54% and sold 11% as many Blu-rays as
Endgame. On the overall package-media chart, the film sold 16% as many total units as as the MCU smash hit.
Finally, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's
Brightburn rounded out the top three on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. A dark, violent riff on the
Superman origin story, this horror movie was a modest earner for its studio following its release last May. While the film netted mediocre critical notices (it has a
44% rating on Metacritic), it ended up grossing
over $32 million worldwide on top of its modest $6-million production budget. Regarding the Blu-ray-only sales list, the film had a very solid HD market share of 75% and sold 11% as many Blu-rays and total units as
Avengers: Endgame.
