Kino Lorber have dated and detailed their upcoming Blu-ray releases of Clarence Brown's
The Eagle (1925) and Jean Renoir's
La Marseillaise (1938). The two releases will be available for purchase this October.
The Eagle
Synopsis: In a departure from his onscreen persona of Latin lover, silent-era sex symbol Rudolph Valentino delivered one of the most nuanced and powerful performances of his career in this epic romance set in 18th-century Russia, directed by Clarence Brown (Flesh and the Devil, Anna Karenina). Valentino stars as Vladimir Dubrovsky, a lieutenant in the Imperial Guard who becomes a fugitive after he rejects the amorous attentions of the Czarina Catherine II (Louise Dresser).
Special Features and Technical Specs:
- 2K RESTORATION FROM 35MM ARCHIVAL ELEMENTS
- NEW musical score composed and performed by Alloy Orchestra
- Audio commentary by film historian Gaylyn Studlar
STREET DATE: OCTOBER 22.
La Marseillaise
Synopsis: In this historical film, renowned director Jean Renoir depicts the French Revolution with an unusually matter-of-fact approach that downplays the dramatic elements of the story. While the filmmaker's brother, Pierre Renoir, portrays the besieged Louis XVI and Lise Delamare plays his iconic wife, Marie Antoinette, the production focuses mostly on the ordinary people caught up in the tumultuous time, resulting in a film that is more concerned with regular citizens than with royalty.
Special Features:
- Archival interview with Jean Renoir
- Audio commentary by film critic Nick Pinkerton
- Booklet essay by film scholar Dudley Andrew
STREET DATE: OCTOBER 29.
