For the week that ended on June 15th, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment and Marvel's
Captain Marvel debuted at number one on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. The MCU's first female-centric superhero story,
Captain Marvel proved a sizable hit following its North American release last March. The film garnered very decent critical comments (it has a
64% rating on Metacritic), and it then went on to
gross over $1.1 billion worldwide on top of its estimated $152-million production budget. This week,
Captain Marvel had a strong Blu-ray market share of 73%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only sales ranking was another Warner title:
Aquaman. Director James Wan's superhero adventure proved one of WB and DC's most successful comic-book adaptations following its theatrical release last December.
Aquaman might have netted only so-so critical comments (it has a
55% rating on Metacritic), but it was a box-office juggernaut,
grossing over $1.1 billion worldwide on top of its estimated $160-to-$200-million production budget.
Aquaman had a terrific Blu-ray market share of 78% and sold 6% as many Blu-rays as
Captain Marvel. But on the overall package-media chart, the WB superhero adventure came in third place - behind Tyler Perry's
A Madea Family Funeral - and also sold 6% as many total units as the Marvel adventure.
Finally, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse rounded out the top three on the Blu-ray-only sales list. This animated
Spider-Man adventure - which exists outside of the MCU's
Tom Holland-starring iteration - proved an unlikely critical and commercial hit during its theatrical release last December. The film
grossed over $189 million domestically on top of its estimated $90-million production budget, and it netted not only strong critical notices (it has a
87% rating on Metacritic) but also the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
Into the Spider-Verse had an impressive Blu-ray market share of 86% and sold 6% as many Blu-rays as
Captain Marvel. Regarding the overall package-media list, the film came in sixth place (under
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and
Five Feet Apart) and sold 5% as many total units as
Captain Marvel.
