Blu-ray Sales, June 2-8: Dragon Flies Away with Number One

For the week that ended on June 8th, Universal Studios Home Entertainment's How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World remained at number one on the Blu-ray-only media chart. The final installment in the acclaimed How to Train Your Dragon series, this film was a modest hit following its North American release last February. The film garnered very solid critical comments (it has a 71% rating on Metacritic), and it then went on to gross $160 million domestically on top of its estimated $129-million production budget. This week, The Hidden World had a Blu-ray market share of 58%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only sales ranking was Warner Home Entertainment's release of Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This latest installment in the DCU's animated division places the Caped Crusader alongside the popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had a very strong Blu-ray market share of 82% and sold 81% as many Blu-rays as The Hidden World. But on the overall package-media chart, the animated adventure came in third place, selling 34% as many total units as Tyler Perry's A Madea Family Funeral.

Speaking of which: Lionsgate Home Entertainment's A Madea Family Funeral rounded out the top three on the Blu-ray-only sales list. Filmmaker Tyler Perry's latest Madea-centric dramedy netted Perry another phenomenal financial success last March. The film garnered less-than glowing critical comments (it has a 39% rating on Metacritic), but viewers were largely indifferent to the reviews, and the film went on to gross $73 million domestically on top of its estimated $20-million production budget. On the Blu-ray-only list, A Madea Family Funeral had an HD market share of 26% and sold 75% as many Blu-rays as The Hidden World. Regarding the overall package-media list, the film handily took the first-place spot; there, The Hidden World sold 60% as many total units as it.
