Blu-ray Sales, May 19-25: Dragon Soars on Home Media

For the week that ended on May 25th, Universal Studios Home Entertainment's How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World debuted at number one on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. The final installment in the acclaimed How to Train Your Dragon series, this film was a modest hit following its North American release last February. The film garnered very solid critical comments (it has a 71% rating on Metacritic), and it then went on to gross $160 million domestically on top of its estimated $129-million production budget. This week, The Hidden World had a good Blu-ray market share of 66%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings was another Universal title: The Upside. A remake of the popular French dramedy The Intouchables, The Upside has quietly become one of 2019's biggest sleeper hits. Yes, the film netted less-than positive critical comments (it has a 46% rating on Metacritic), but it went on to earn $108 million domestically on top of its estimated $37.5-million production budget. The Upside had a Blu-ray market share of 45% and sold 13% as many Blu-rays and 19% as many total units as The Hidden World.

Finally, Warner Home Entertainment's The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part rounded out the top three on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. This sequel to the hit animated comedy The LEGO Movie was a modest success following its North American release last February. The film garnered okay critical comments (it has a 65% rating on Metacritic), and it then went on to gross $105 million domestically on top of its estimated $99-million production budget. On the Blu-ray-only list, The Second Part had an HD market share of 58% and sold 11% as many Blu-rays as The Hidden World. Regarding the overall package-media list, the film sold 12% as many total units as the How to Train Your Dragon sequel.
