For the week that ended on April 13th, Paramount Home Media Distribution's
Bumblebee remained at number one on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. This
Transformers prequel struggled somewhat to connect with viewers last December. While the film garnered solid - for a
Transformers movie - critical comments (it has a
66% rating on Metacritic), it then went on to
gross $127 million domestically on top of its estimated $135-million production budget (in fairness, it performed much better overseas: note its $339.7-million international totals). This week,
Bumblebee had a Blu-ray market share of 59%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings was Warner Home Entertainment's
Aquaman. Director James Wan's superhero adventure proved one of WB and DC's most successful comic-book adaptations following its theatrical release last December.
Aquaman might have netted only so-so critical comments (it has a
55% rating on Metacritic), but it was a box-office juggernaut,
grossing over $1.1 billion worldwide on top of its estimated $160-to-$200-million production budget.
Aquaman had a Blu-ray market share of 54% and sold 84% as many Blu-rays and 91% as many total units as
Bumblebee.
Finally, another Warner title -
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald - rounded out the top three on the Blu-ray-only sales list. A prequel to the
Harry Potter franchise - and the immediate follow-up to 2016's
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them -
The Crimes of Grindelwald underperformed for the studio in North America last year. The film netted average critical notices (it has a
52% rating on Metacritic) and went on to
gross over $159 million domestically on top of its estimated $200-million production budget (it did make far more - to the tune of an extra $494 million - overseas). On the Blu-ray-only list,
The Crimes of Grindelwald had a strong HD market share of 70% and sold 49% as many Blu-rays as
Bumblebee. Regarding the overall package-media list, the film came in fifth place (behind
The Mule and
A Dog's Way Home, respectively) and sold 42% as many total units as the
Transformers feature.
