Blu-ray Sales, March 31-April 6: Bumblebee Races to the Top

For the week that ended on April 6th, Paramount Home Media Distribution's Bumblebee premiered at number one on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. This Transformers prequel struggled somewhat to connect with viewers last December. While the film garnered solid - for a Transformers movie - critical comments (it has a 66% rating on Metacritic), it then went on to gross $127 million domestically on top of its estimated $135-million production budget (in fairness, it performed much better overseas: note its $339.7-million international totals). This week, Bumblebee had a very good Blu-ray market share of 65%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings was Warner Home Entertainment's Aquaman. Director James Wan's superhero adventure proved one of WB and DC's most successful comic-book adaptations following its theatrical release last December. Aquaman might have netted only so-so critical comments (it has a 55% rating on Metacritic), but it was a box-office juggernaut, grossing over $1.1 billion worldwide on top of its estimated $160-to-$200-million production budget. Aquaman had a Blu-ray market share of 57% and sold 66% as many Blu-rays and 76% as many total units as Bumblebee.

Finally, another Warner title - the adult drama The Mule - rounded out the top three on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. The latest film from filmmaker Clint Eastwood, The Mule proved a sleeper hit for its star and studio. The film scored mediocre reviews (note its 58% Metacritic score), but audiences largely supported it, to the tune of a $170-million worldwide gross on top of its modest $50-million budget. On the Blu-ray-only list, The Mule had an HD market share of 40% and sold 30% as many Blu-rays as Bumblebee. Regarding the overall package-media list, the film sold 49% as many total units as the Transformers adventure.
