For the week that ended on March 23rd, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse premiered at number one on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. This animated
Spider-Man adventure - which exists outside of the MCU's
Tom Holland-starring iteration - proved an unlikely critical and commercial hit during its theatrical release last December. The film
grossed over $189 million domestically on top of its estimated $90-million production budget, and it netted not only strong critical notices (it has a
87% rating on Metacritic) but also the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. This week,
Into the Spider-Verse had a very strong Blu-ray market share of 78%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings was Walt Disney Home Entertainment's
Mary Poppins Returns. The long-awaited follow-up to Disney's
1964 classic Mary Poppins,
Mary Poppins Returns was a modest success following its holiday release. The film scored solid reviews (note its
66% Metacritic score) and
grossed over $171 million domestically on top of its estimated $130-million budget.
Mary Poppins Returns had a terrific Blu-ray market share of 78% and sold 91% as many Blu-rays and total units as
Into the Spider-Verse.
Finally, Warner Home Entertainment's
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald rounded out the top three on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. A prequel to the
Harry Potter franchise - and the immediate follow-up to 2016's
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them -
The Crimes of Grindelwald underperformed for the studio in North America last year. The film netted average critical notices (it has a
52% rating on Metacritic) and went on to
gross over $159 million domestically on top of its estimated $200-million production budget (it did make far more - to the tune of an extra $494 million - overseas). On the Blu-ray-only list,
The Crimes of Grindelwald had an HD market share of 60% and sold 32% as many Blu-rays as
Into the Spider-Verse. Regarding the overall package-media list, the film sold 42% as many total units as the
