Blu-ray Sales, December 9-15: The Equalizer 2 Destroys the Competition

For the week that ended on December 15th, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's The Equalizer 2 debuted at number one on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. Director Antoine Fuqua's sequel to his hit Denzel Washington actioner The Equalizer, the film was a solid performer following its July 2018 release. While it only garnered mediocre critical notices (it has a 50% score on Metacritic), it still went on to gross over $102 million domestically on top of its estimated $62-million production budget. This week, the film had a good Blu-ray market share of 60%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings was Warner Home Entertainment's Smallfoot. This animated comedy about yetis was a modest success last September. It got decent critical notices (it has an 60% score on Metacritic), and then it went on to gross over $82 million domestically on top of its estimated $82-million production budget. Smallfoot had a Blu-ray market share of 46% and sold 57% as many Blu-rays and 74% as many total units as The Equalizer 2.

Finally, Paramount Home Media Distribution's Mission: Impossible - Fallout rounded out the top three on the Blu-ray-only sales list. The sixth installment in the popular Mission: Impossible franchise - and the second directed by Rogue Nation helmer Chris McQuarrie - Mission: Impossible - Fallout was a big success following its July 2018 release. The film scored terrific critical notices (it has an 86% score on Metacritic), and it then grossed over $791 million worldwide on top of its estimated $178-million production budget. On the Blu-ray-only list, Fallout had an HD market share of 67% and sold 50% as many Blu-rays as The Equalizer 2. Regarding the overall package-media chart, the film came in fourth place - behind Incredibles 2 - and sold 45% as many total units as the Equalizer sequel.
