Worldwide Blu-ray Sales On Pace for 100M Units in 2009

In a new report from Futuresource Consulting, the research firm is now saying that the Blu-ray format is currently on pace to sell 100 million units this year worldwide. The majority of those sales would still occur in the US, which is predicted to represent 80% of total disc sales. The second largest buyer is said to be the UK, which represent 40% of Western Europe in Blu-ray units sold.
Normally, I would not comment on analysis of this nature, but being that the analysis covers current year projections (rather than 3-5 years from now), I feel it holds more merit. As always, only time will tell.
In 2008, approximately 36 million units were sold of Blu-ray titles, an increase of over 300% from the previous year. Additionally, because of the success of Blu-ray in the US, the format has moved from the "early adopter" phase to "early majority", with sales expected to dramatically increase throughout the year.
