For the week that ended on October 13th, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's
Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation debuted at number one on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. The most recent entry in the popular
Hotel Transylvania franchise, this animated comedy proved another big commercial success for its distributor. While the film scored mediocre critical notices (it has a
54% Metacritic score), it went on to
gross almost $518 million worldwide on top of its estimated $80-million production budget. This week,
Hotel Transylvania 3 had a Blu-ray market share of 53%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings was Universal Studios Home Entertainment's
Skyscraper. This Dwayne Johnson-starring actioner - an amalgamation of
Die Hard,
The Towering Inferno, and
The Fugitive - struggled to find an audience despite its mass appeal. After receiving so-so critical notices (a
51% score on Metacritic), the film then went on to
gross $67.7 million domestically on top of its estimated production budget of $125 million (in fairness, its foreign totals - almost $236 million - were much more promising).
Skyscraper had an HD market share of 45% and sold 52% as many Blu-rays and 61% as many total units as
Hotel Transylvania 3.
Finally, Lucasfilm and Walt Disney Home Entertainment's
Solo: A Star Wars Story rounded out the top three on the Blu-ray-only sales list. Like
Rogue One,
Solo offered fans another prequel to
the Star Wars original trilogy, although unlike
Rogue One,
Solo didn't find the same level of commercial success following its May release.
Solo garnered an adequate critical reception (note its
62% Metacritic score) but
grossed over $213 million domestically on top of its estimated $275-million production budget. In terms of just Blu-rays,
Solo had a strong HD market share of 73% and sold 39% as many Blu-rays as the
Hotel Transylvania sequel. For the overall package-media list, the superhero action-comedy came in fourth place (behind
Hocus Pocus) and sold 28% as many total units as
Hotel Transylvania 3.
