Blu-ray Sales, September 2-8 Deadpool 2 Defeats All Other Titles

For the week that ended on September 8th, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's Deadpool 2 remained (for the third week in a row) at number one on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. The much-anticipated follow-up to Tim Miller and Ryan Reynolds' 2016 smash hit, this raunchy action-comedy proved almost as successful as its predecessor. Deadpool 2 garnered fine critical notices (note its 66% Metacritic score) and grossed over $734 million worldwide on top of its estimated $110-million production budget. This week, the film had a good Blu-ray market share of 62%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings was Marvel and Walt Disney Home Entertainment's Avengers: Infinity War. This third entry in the joint The Avengers series - and the most narratively consequential MCU feature of 2018 - Infinity War has proven to be one of the year's biggest successes. After receiving decent critical notices (a 68% score on Metacritic), the film then went on to gross over $2 billion worldwide on top of its massive estimated production budget (somewhere in the realm of $315-to-$400 million). Infinity War had a solid HD market share of 67% and sold 96% as many Blu-rays and 89% as many total units as the Deadpool sequel.

Finally, Lionsgate Home Entertainment's Hereditary rounded out the top three on the Blu-ray-only sales list. A violent, psychologically bleak chiller, Hereditary proved the big indie success of the summer. The film scored rapturous reviews (it has an 87% Metacritic score), and it went on to gross over $44 million domestically on top of its estimated $10-million production budget. Hereditary had another solid Blu-ray market share (61%) and sold 38% as many Blu-rays as Deadpool 2. Regarding the overall package-media chart, it came in fifth place (behind Hocus Pocus and Book Club) and sold 39% as many total units as the second Deadpool.
