In a time when a musicians' popularity rises and falls more often than the tides, it is somewhat difficult to imagine that a single person could be regarded as "the best", and that people could hold that sentiment over 200 years after his death. I of course speak of the legendary composer/musician Mozart, whose work - which comprises of some 600 pieces - is considered some of the most important and groundbreaking music ever created.
Today, Warner Home Video brings the semi-biographical, Academy Award-winning film '
Amadeus' to Blu-ray in their Digibook packaging. Also included with the release is a CD sampler of Mozart's music. Luckily, this film has been recently remastered and has received a wonderful Dolby TrueHD audio track - without which, this release would have truly been disappointing.
Fox is aiming right for the hearts of fanboys with two cult classic films being released on Blu-ray in '
Donnie Darko: Collector's Edition' and '
The Boondock Saints'. With Darko scratching together just over a million at the box office, and the Saints grossing $50K over five theaters, both films are considered Hollywood failures. But when released on DVD, both films managed to pick up a devoted cult following, racking up sales that would make some blockbuster titles envious. These two films will without-a-doubt sell many copies now that they've received high definition transfers.
Still, the most truly "cult" movie released today has to be the Image Entertainment Blu-ray edition of '
My Name is Bruce'. The film stars one of the most legendary cult film stars - Bruce Campbell - as himself in a cult film. That's twice the cult!
When Blu-ray was initially launched, the format's focus was on guy-centric films - the more action and gore, the better. Now that the format is becoming more mainstream, studios are turning to those films geared towards female film fans. This week reinforces that with the Blu-ray releases of '
Pretty Woman' and '
Nights in Rodanthe'. For 'Pretty Woman', Disney has done a great job bringing this film to the digital age. The video transfer is solid - though, it does have issue with blacks - and the PCM soundtrack is great.
'
Raging Bull' also hits store shelves today. Nuff said.
