Blu-ray Sales, August 19-25: Deadpool 2 Trips Up Infinity War

For the week that ended on August 25th, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's Deadpool 2 debuted at number one on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. The much-anticipated follow-up to Tim Miller and Ryan Reynolds' 2016 smash hit, this raunchy action-comedy proved almost as successful as its predecessor. Deadpool 2 garnered fine critical notices (note its 66% Metacritic score) and grossed over $734 million worldwide on top of its estimated $110-million production budget. This week, the film had a terrific Blu-ray market share of 76%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings was Marvel and Walt Disney Home Entertainment's Avengers: Infinity War. The third entry in the joint The Avengers series - and the most narratively consequential MCU feature of 2018 - Infinity War has proven to be one of the year's biggest successes. After receiving decent critical notices (a 68% score on Metacritic), the film then went on to gross over $2 billion worldwide on top of its massive estimated production budget (somewhere in the realm of $315-to-$400 million). Infinity War had a very solid HD market share of 72% and sold 50% as many Blu-rays and 53% as many total units as the Deadpool sequel.

Finally, two very different titles jockeyed for third place, depending on the Blu-ray-only or overall package-media sales lists. On the Blu-ray-only charts, Deadpool once again proved a success: more specifically, the Deadpool: Complete Collection (For Now) that bundles together the first two films in the franchise. That two-pack sold 5% as many Blu-rays as just Deadpool 2 and had an HD market share of 100%. However, regarding the overall package-media list, Deadpool: The Complete Collection (For Now) came in fifth place, with the faith-based drama God's Not Dead: A Light in Darkness taking the third-place slot. That film had a Blu-ray market share of 36% and sold 4% as many total units as Deadpool 2.
