Blu-ray Sales, July 15-21: Rampage Destroys the Competition

For the week that ended on July 21st, Warner Home Entertainment's Rampage debuted at number one on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. Star Dwayne Johnson's explosive creature-feature - an adaptation of the popular video game - has struggled to connect with critics and audiences in North America. It received below-average critical notices (the film has a 45% rating on Metacritic) and domestically, the film only grossed $99 million on top of its $120-million production budget (in fairness, Rampage proved far more successful outside North America, picking up an additional $326.9 million from foreign markets). This week, Rampage had a Blu-ray market share of 50%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings was Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's Super Troopers 2. The long-delayed sequel to Broken Lizard's 2001 cult favorite, this R-rated comedy was a modest success following its premiere last April. While it received underwhelming critical notices (the film has a 41% Metacritic rating), it still grossed $30.6 million domestically on top of its estimated $13.5-million production budget. Super Troopers 2 had an HD market share of 56% and sold 41% as many Blu-rays and 36% as many total units as Rampage.

Finally, Warner's eight-film Harry Potter Collection filled out the top-three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. One of cinema's most iconic studio franchises of recent years, the Harry Potter film series is having a resurgence this year, thanks to the upcoming release of Fantastic Beasts: The Crime of Grindelwald, and products like this one help viewers commemorate such milestones. The Harry Potter Collection had an HD market share of 69% and sold 41% as many Blu-rays as Rampage. Regarding the overall package-media list, the film sold 29% as many total units as the Dwayne Johnson-starring actioner.
