Blu-ray Sales, June 24-30: Pacific Rim Remains at Number One

For the week that ended on June 30th, Universal Studios Home Entertainment's Pacific Rim: Uprising remained at number one on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. A sequel to Guillermo Del Toro's cult 2013 monster movie, Uprising also didn't immediately connect with critics and audiences. Critics found it flawed (note its so-so 44% Metacritic rating), and it only grossed $59 million domestically on top of its estimated $150-million production budget (that said, the picture performed much stronger overseas, earning an additional $230 million). This week, Pacific Rim: Uprising had a very solid Blu-ray market share of 67%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only sales ranking was Marvel and Disney's Black Panther. Another superhero entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Black Panther was a massive success with both critics and audiences following its February premiere. Critics largely adored the film (note its robust 88% favorability rating on Metacritic), and viewers were just as supportive, turning out to the film to the tune of a $1.3-billion worldwide gross on top of its estimated $205-million production budget. Black Panther had an HD market share of 58% and sold 44% as many Blu-rays as Pacific Rim: Uprising. Regarding the overall package-media list, the film came in fourth place (behind Tyler Perry's Acrimony and I Can Only Imagine, respectively) and sold 51% as many total units as the Pacific Rim sequel.

Finally, Lionsgate Home Entertainment's I Can Only Imagine filled out the top-three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. This faith-based melodrama - which looks at the story behind the crossover pop hit "I Can Only Imagine" - proved far more successful with audiences than critics following its release last March. The critical consensus was below average (given its 29% rating on Metacritic), but the film went on to gross over $83 million domestically on top of its modest $7-million production budget. I Can Only Imagine had an HD market share of 34% and sold 43% as many Blu-rays and 84% as many total units as Pacific Rim: Uprising.
