Blu-ray Sales, June 17-23: Pacific Rim Beats Other Titles

For the week that ended on June 23rd, Universal Studios Home Entertainment's Pacific Rim: Uprising debuted at the top spot on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. A sequel to Guillermo Del Toro's cult 2013 monster movie, Uprising also didn't immediately connect with critics and audiences. Critics found it flawed (note its so-so 44% Metacritic rating), and it only grossed $59 million domestically on top of its estimated $150-million production budget (that said, the picture performed much stronger overseas, earning an additional $230 million). This week, Pacific Rim: Uprising had a strong Blu-ray market share of 71%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings was Lionsgate Home Entertainment's I Can Only Imagine. This faith-based melodrama - which looks at the story behind the crossover pop hit "I Can Only Imagine" - proved far more successful with audiences than critics following its release last March. The critical consensus was below average (given its 29% rating on Metacritic), but the film went on to gross over $83 million domestically on top of its modest $7-million production budget. I Can Only Imagine had an HD market share of 37% and sold 34% as many Blu-rays and 64% as many total units as Pacific Rim: Uprising.

Finally, Warner and MGM Home Entertainment's Tomb Raider filled out the top-three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. Director Roar Uthaug's grittier reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise struggled to connect with both fans and critics after its release in March. It received mediocre critical notices (vide its 48% Metacritic rating), and domestic audiences only helped it gross $57 million on top of its estimated $94-million production budget (in fairness, international showings were more profitable, given the film's worldwide gross of $273 million). Tomb Raider had an HD market share of 53% and sold 29% as many Blu-rays and 39% as many overall package-media units as the Pacific Rim sequel.
