Blu-ray Sales, June 10-16: I Can Only Imagine A Win Over Tomb Raider

For the week that ended on June 16th, Lionsgate Home Entertainment's I Can Only Imagine debuted at the top spot on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. This faith-based melodrama - which looks at the story behind the crossover pop hit "I Can Only Imagine" - proved far more successful with audiences than critics following its release last March. The critical consensus was below average (given its 29% rating on Metacritic), but the film went on to gross over $83 million domestically on top of its modest $7-million production budget. This week, I Can Only Imagine had a Blu-ray market share of 40%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings was Warner and MGM Home Entertainment's Tomb Raider. Director Roar Uthaug's grittier reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise struggled to connect with both fans and critics after its release in March. It received mediocre critical notices (vide its 48% Metacritic rating), and domestic audiences only helped it gross $57 million on top of its estimated $94-million production budget (in fairness, international showings were more profitable, given the film's worldwide gross of $273 million). Tomb Raider had an HD market share of 57% and sold 83% as many Blu-rays and 58% as many total units as I Can Only Imagine.

Finally, Marvel and Walt Disney Home Entertainment's Black Panther filled out the top-three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. Another superhero entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Black Panther was a massive success with both critics and audiences following its February premiere. Critics largely adored the film (note its robust 88% favorability rating on Metacritic), and viewers were just as supportive, turning out to the film to the tune of a $1.3-billion worldwide gross (and counting - it's still playing in first-run in some markets) on top of its estimated $205-million production budget. Black Panther had a strong HD market share of 73% and sold 78% as many Blu-rays and 43% as many overall package-media units as I Can Only Imagine.
