For the week that ended on June 9th, Walt Disney Home Entertainment's
A Wrinkle in Time debuted at the top spot on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. This adaptation of Madeleine L'Engle's iconic YA classic didn't prove the crossover success for which both Disney and director Ava DuVernay had hoped. The critical consensus was mixed (given its
53% rating on Metacritic), and the film went on to gross
$131 million worldwide on top of its estimated $130-million production budget. This week,
A Wrinkle in Time had a strong Blu-ray market share of 71%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings was Marvel and Disney's
Black Panther. Another superhero entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe,
Black Panther was a massive success with both critics and audiences following its February premiere. Critics largely adored the film (note its robust
88% favorability rating on Metacritic), and viewers were just as supportive, turning out to the film to the tune of a
$1.3-billion worldwide gross (and counting - it's still playing in first-run in some markets) on top of its estimated $205-million production budget.
Black Panther had a solid HD market share of 64% and sold 61% as many Blu-rays and 68% as many overall package-media units as
A Wrinkle in Time.
Finally, MGM Home Entertainment's
Death Wish filled out the top-three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. Director Eli Roth's violent remake of the
1974 cult classic struggled to connect with both fans and critics after its release in March. It received poor critical notices (
vide its
31% Metacritic rating), and audiences only made it a modest success, given the film's middling
domestic gross of $34 million on top of its estimated $30-million production budget.
Death Wish had an HD market share of 58% and sold 43% as many Blu-rays and 53% as many total units as
A Wrinkle in Time.
