For the week that ended on May 26th, Marvel and Walt Disney Home Entertainment's
Black Panther remained at number one on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. Another superhero entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe,
Black Panther was a massive success with both critics and audiences following its February premiere. Critics largely adored the film (note its robust
88% favorability rating on Metacritic), and viewers were just as supportive, turning out to the film to the tune of a
$1.3-billion worldwide gross (and counting - it's still playing in first-run in some markets) on top of its estimated $205-million production budget. This week,
Black Panther had a strong Blu-ray market share of 68%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings was Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's
Red Sparrow. An adult, R-rated spy drama, this Jennifer Lawrence vehicle struggled to connect with both fans and critics after its release in March. It received only so-so critical notices (
vide its
53% Metacritic rating), and viewers weren't much more supportive, given its middling
domestic gross of $47 million on top of its estimated $69-million production budget (to be fair, the film performed much better overseas, where it earned an additional 101.6 million).
Red Sparrow had a solid HD market share of 62% and sold 20% as many Blu-rays and 22% as many overall package-media units as
Black Panther.
Finally, Warner Home Entertainment's Fox's
Game Night filled out the top-three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. This dark farce - which takes its primary inspiration from the David Fincher thriller
The Game - proved a sleeper hit with audiences last February. The film garnered average critical notices (a
66% Metacritic rating), but viewers still largely supported the picture, helping it earn a
domestic gross of $69 million on top of its estimated $37-million production budget.
Game Night had an HD market share of 48% and sold 10% as many Blu-rays and 14% as many total units as
Black Panther.
