StudioCanal to Celebrate 40th Anniversary of The Deer Hunter with New 4K Restoration on Blu-ray

StudioCanal will celebrate the 40th anniversary of director Michael Cimino's classic film The Deer Hunter (1978) with a new Collector's Edition Blu-ray release sourced from a new 4K restoration. The release will be available for purchase on August 13.

Synopsis: Robert De Niro, John Savage and Christopher Walken star in this Michael Cimino war drama. As Michael (De Niro), Steven (Savage) and Nick (Walken) volunteer to serve in Vietnam, they fail to foresee the horrors that will encapsulate their future lives. When the men are captured by the Vietcong and forced to play Russian roulette for their entertainment, Michael and Steven manage to escape leaving Nick to fight off the enemy. As Steven is shipped home, severely disabled and damaged by the whole experience, he discovers that Nick has sent him money to help him get back into society. When the news of the fall of Saigon reaches home, Michael vows to return to Vietnam to bring home his friend.

Bagdad Cafe

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of this cult film with a legendary soundtrack, StudioCanal scanned the original camera negative in 4K for a beautiful new restoration. The work was carried out at the legendary Alpha Omega Digital in Munich, under the supervision of director Percy Adlon. The original negative, perfectly preserved in Los Angeles, was sent to Munich for scanning. The new restoration reinstates the original colors of the film and its spontaneous spirit.

Synopsis: Drawn to a pair of lights in the barren American desert sky, a mysterious German woman, Jasmin, stumbles upon a dilapidated motel/diner in the middle of nowhere. Her unusual appearance and demeanor are at first suspicious to Brenda, the exasperated owner who has difficulty making ends meet. But when an unlikely magic sparks between the two women, this lonely desert outpost is transformed into a thriving — and popular — oasis. Starring CCH Pounder, Jack Palance, Marianne Sägebrecht, Christine Kaufmann, and Monica Calhoun.

The Crime of Monsieur Lange/Le Crime de Monsieur Lange

New 4K restoration of Jean Renoir's film The Crime of Monsieur Lange undertaken by StudioCanal and completed at L'Immagine Ritrovata in 2017.

Synopsis: Director Jean Renoir's social commentary, heavily influenced by the French political spirit of the 1930s, concerns Amédée Lange (René Lefevre), a publishing house clerk who pens Western dime-novels in his spare time. When his unscrupulous boss, Batala (Jules Berry), gives his debt collectors the slip by pretending to be dead, Lange and his co-workers take over the business themselves and thrive on the popularity of Lange's pulp stories until Batala returns to demand his share of the profits.

The Nun/La Religieuse

A brand new 4K restoration of Jacques Rivette's 'forbidden' film was completed by StudioCanal and introduced at this year's edition of Cannes Classics. The restoration wok was carried out at L'Immagine Ritrovata under the supervision of Ms. Veronique Manniez-Rivette.

Synopsis: Around 1750, a young girl is sent to a convent against her will. When she attempts to renounce her vows, she finds herself caught in a fatal trap. Starring Anna Karina, Liselotte Pulver, Micheline Presle, Francisco Rabal, and Jean Martin.

STREET DATE: SEPTEMBER 10.

Last Year in Marienbad

One of the most enigmatic films ever made from the masterful Alain Resnais. In a vast and opulent hotel, an unnamed man (Albertazzi) attempts to persuade a similarly unnamed married woman (Seyrig) that they have not only met before, but that they were also romantically involved and had planned to elope together. New 4K restoration.

STREET DATE: SEPTEMBER 3.

The Seventh Seal

New 4K restoration of Ingmar Bergman's classic film completed by the Swedish Film Institute and introduced at Cannes Classics. The studio has confirmed that it will celebrate the director's centenary later this year with a new box set including rare films from the Swedish master. (Currently confirmed for France and Germany only).

Synopsis: When disillusioned Swedish knight Antonius Block (Max von Sydow) returns home from the Crusades to find his country in the grips of the Black Death, he challenges Death (Bengt Ekerot) to a chess match for his life. Tormented by the belief that God does not exist, Block sets off on a journey, meeting up with traveling players Jof (Nils Poppe) and his wife, Mia (Bibi Andersson), and becoming determined to evade Death long enough to commit one redemptive act while he still lives.
