For the week that ended on May 19th, Marvel and Walt Disney Home Entertainment's
Black Panther made its home-media debut at number one on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. Another superhero entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe,
Black Panther was a massive success with both critics and audiences following its February premiere. Critics largely adored the film (note its robust
88% favorability rating on Metacritic), and viewers were just as supportive, turning out to the film to the tune of a
$1.3-billion worldwide gross (and counting - it's still playing in first-run in some markets) on top of its estimated $205-million production budget. This week,
Black Panther had a strong Blu-ray market share of 70%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings was Universal Studios Home Entertainment's
Fifty Shades Freed. The final entry in the
Fifty Shades of Grey series, this erotic thriller overcame toxic critical notices and found decent commercial success. Critics hated the film (
vide its
31% Metacritic rating), but viewers were more supportive, helping it
gross over $368 million worldwide on top of its estimated $55-million production budget.
Fifty Shades had an HD market share of 57% and sold 8% as many Blu-rays and 10% as many overall package-media units as
Black Panther.
Finally, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's Fox's
The Greatest Showman filled out the top-three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. This musical biopic about the life and times of P.T. Barnum (Hugh Jackman),
The Greatest Showman proved a sleeper hit with audiences last December. The film garnered mediocre critical notices (a
48% Metacritic rating), but viewers still supported the picture, helping it net a
worldwide gross of $424 million on top of its estimated $84-million production budget.
The Greatest Showman had an HD market share of 57% and sold 4% as many Blu-rays and total units as
Black Panther.
