For the week that ended on April 28th, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's
Maze Runner: The Death Cure debuted at number one on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. The final entry in the
Maze Runner trilogy struggled to connect with critics and audiences last January. The film only scored so-so critical takes (a
51% Metacritic rating), and domestic viewers weren't much more supportive; in North America, the film
grossed $58 million on top of its estimated $62-million production budget (in fairness, it did add an additional $226.8 million in overseas totals). This week,
The Death Cure had a Blu-ray market share of 58%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings was Fox's
The Greatest Showman. This musical biopic about the life and times of P.T. Barnum (Hugh Jackman),
The Greatest Showman proved a sleeper hit with audiences last December. The film garnered mediocre critical notices (a
48% Metacritic rating), but viewers still supported the picture, helping it net a
worldwide gross of $424 million on top of its estimated $84-million production budget.
The Greatest Showman had a solid HD market share of 60% and sold 91% as many Blu-rays and 88% as many overall package-media units as
The Death Cure.
Finally, Lucasfilm and Walt Disney Home Entertainment's
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi filled out the top-three spots on the Blu-ray-only sales list. The latest - and most controversial - installment in the iconic
Star Wars franchise,
The Last Jedi was a massive hit with critics and audiences. The film garnered great critical notices (an
85% Metacritic rating), and viewers supported the picture to the tune of a
$1.3-billion gross (worldwide) on top of its estimated $200-million production budget.
The Last Jedi had a very solid HD market share of 70% and sold 52% as many Blu-rays as
The Death Cure. Regarding the overall package-media list, the film came in fifth place (behind
Den of Thieves and
Hostiles, respectively) and sold 43% as many total units as the third
Maze Runner picture.
