Kino Lorber have detailed four upcoming Blu-ray releases: The Martian Chronicles (1980), Jack the Giant Killer (1962), The Return (2003), and The Banishment (2007). All four releases will be available for purchase this June.

The Martian Chronicles

Synopsis: Making contact was the beginning of the end… From the mind of legendary writer Ray Bradbury (Fahrenheit 451, Something Wicked This Way Comes) springs what is perhaps his most epic vision. Capturing mankind's first venture into the colonization of another planet – and its tragic first contact with another species - The Martian Chronicles is a stunning achievement that will take you from the edge of your seat and to the stars. Earth is on the verge of extinction. To survive, mankind must find another place to live. And when three expeditions to Mars, headed by Col. John Wilder (Rock Hudson, Avalanche), find suitable conditions for relocations, humans pour in by the shipload, bringing the old evils of Earth with them. As Wilder begins to heed the lessons of the dying Martian civilization, can he save humanity from repeating its own doom?

Michael Anderson (Logan's Run, Orca) directed this epic mini-series featuring Gayle Hunnicutt (Marlowe), Bernie Casey (Sharky's Machine), Darren McGavin (TV's The Night Stalker), Roddy McDowall (Fright Night), Bernadette Peters (The Jerk), Joyce Van Patten (The Falcon and the Snowman), Fritz Weaver (Black Sunday), Maria Schell (The Hanging Tree) and James Faulkner (TV's Game of Thrones).

Special Features and Technical Specs:

  • Interview with Actor James Faulkner
  • Reversible Cover Art

Jack the Giant Killer

Synopsis: Forget about beanstalks. This "vivid fairy tale" (LA Herald-Examiner) brilliantly re-imagines the beloved fable as a rugged adventure that delights with "vigorous acting and excellent trick effects" (Halliwell's Film and Video Guide)! Reuniting the director and stars (Kerwin Mathews and Torin Thatcher) of The 7th Voyage of Sinbad), this visual treat is a journey you'll want to take again and again!

Farm boy Jack heroically rescues Princess Elaine from sorcerer Pendragon by slaying his bloodthirsty giant. But when Pendragon uses his evil powers to bewitch and imprison Elaine in his enchanted fortress, Jack must cross the ocean to brave dragons, two headed ogres and an army of ghouls to save his lady love!

The Banishment

The Return

Synopsis: The debut feature of celebrated director Andrey Zvyagintsev (Loveless, Leviathan) earns its place in the pantheon of great Russian Cinema. Winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival, the film is a mixture of psychological thriller and road movie, telling the story of two young brothers who must cope with the sudden and unexplained return of their father after a 12-year absence. The three embark on a road trip that becomes a background for self-discovery and the destruction of deeply rooted emotional investments.

Straightforward yet satisfyingly layered, The Return combines deep psychological exploration with bold statements about the trials of manhood.

  • NEW interview with director Andrey Zvyagintsev
  • THE RETURN: A FILM ABOUT THE FILM (2004, 63 minutes)
  • Trailers
  • Optional English subtitles for the main feature

The Banishment

Synopsis: Andrey Zvyagintsev (Loveless, Leviathan) proffers an ambitious exploration of the human condition in his second feature. Much like his critically acclaimed debut The Return, the film investigates bonds of family, this time tackling the relationship between a husband and wife. A trip to the pastoral countryside reveals a dark, sinister reality for a family from the city.

Eschewing easy answers and tackling a wide array of themes, The Banishment poetically renders the persistent human state of exile from our surroundings. Based on the novel The Laughing Matter by William Saroyan.

Special Features:
  • NEW interview with director Andrey Zvyagintsev
  • Behind-the-Scenes Featurette (22 minutes)
  • Trailers
  • Optional English subtitles for the main feature
