Blu-ray Sales, March 11-17: Justice League Overtakes Thor on Home Media

For the week that ended on March 17th, DC and Warner Home Entertainment's Justice League debuted at the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. This troubled follow-up to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice struggled to improve DC's cinematic fortunes and live up to the high bar that Wonder Woman set. The film scored below-average critical notices (a 45% Metacritic rating) and went on to gross over $229 million domestically on top of its rumored $300-million production budget. This week, Justice League had a good Blu-ray market share of 70%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings was Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Home Entertainment's Thor: Ragnarok. The third film in Marvel's Thor franchise - and the latest installment in its popular MCU offerings - Ragnarok became the runaway box-office success that has eluded the Thor pictures up to this point. The film scored decent critical notices (a 74% Metacritic rating) and went on to gross over $854 million worldwide on top of its estimated $180-million production budget. Thor had a solid HD market share of 70% and sold 44% as many Blu-rays and overall package-media units as Justice League.

Finally, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's Ferdinand filled out the top-three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. A CGI-animated adaptation of the popular Munro Leaf and Robert Lawson children's book, Ferdinand didn't really connect with either viewers or critics after its release in December. The picture scored okay critical ratings (a 58% Metacritic score), and audiences didn't responded much more favorably, to the tune of an $83-million domestic gross on top of its estimated $111-million production budget. Ferdinand had an HD market share of 59% and sold 35% as many Blu-rays and 42% as many total units as Justice League.
