The Sacrifice
Synopsis: Famed Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky's final masterpiece, The Sacrifice is a haunting vision of a world threatened with nuclear annihilation that inspired Andrew Sarris (The Village Voice) to proclaim, "You may find yourself moved as you have never been moved before."
As a wealthy Swedish family celebrates the birthday of their patriarch Alexander (Erland Josephson, Cries and Whispers), news of the outbreak of World War III reaches their remote Baltic island and the happy mood turns to horror. The family descends into a state of psychological devastation, brilliantly evoked by Tarkovsky's arresting palette of luminous greys washing over the bleak landscape around their home. (The film's masterful cinematography is by Sven Nykvist, Ingmar Bergman's longtime collaborator).
For Alexander, a philosopher troubled about man's lack of spirituality, the prospect of certain extinction compels the ultimate sacrifice, and he enters into a Faustian bargain with God to save his loved ones from the fear which grips them. The director's last film, made as he was dying of cancer, The Sacrifice is Tarkovsky's personal statement, a profoundly moving, redemptive tragedy steeped in unforgettable imagery and heart-wrenching emotion.

Tom Waltz (Rick Lenz, Cactus Flower) is flying to France to see his hospitalized father (Jackie Gleason, Papa's Delicate Condition). While aboard the jet, Tom recalls many scenes from his past. Specifically, the time his father generously donated a $10,000 gift to Tom's philosophy department from money he won through a poetry contest. The winning poem was given to him by artist named Lena (Shelley Winters, Whoever Slew Auntie Roo?) with whom he has an unconsummated affair not knowing the poem was actually the sonnet "How Do I Love Thee?" by Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Michael Gordon (Pillow Talk) directed this comedy of regrets and errors based on a book by Peter De Vries (Pete 'n' Tillie) and co-starring screen legend Maureen O'Hara (Miracle on 34th Street) as Tom's mom and beautiful Rosemary Forsyth (What Ever Happened to Aunt Alice?) as his wife.

When Molly sets out from New York on a cross-country bus tour, she just wants to see America. But her plans take an unexpected turn out West, when she collides (literally!) with Duke while he's competing at the rodeo. He assumes she's just another pretty gal who'll fall into his arms, but she's a lady who won't be roped easily by a brawling, rough-and-ready cowboy.
Jean Arthur shows the spunk that made her one of the biggest stars of Hollywood's Golden Era, and John Wayne is at his most charming when he falls for her against his better judgment. So get ready for the dust to fly when these two screen legends star in a truly classic romantic comedy,
