For the week that ended on February 17th, Lionsgate Home Entertainment's
Wonder debuted at the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. This heartfelt family dramedy - an adaptation of R.J. Palacio's YA novel - proved an enduring favorite after its release in November. The picture scored decent critical ratings (a
66% Metacritic rating), and audiences responded strongly to the film, helping its gross
$292 million worldwide on top of its estimated $20-million production budget. This week,
Wonder had a Blu-ray market share of 46%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings was Universal Studios Home Entertainment's
A Bad Moms Christmas. The sequel to the 2016 sleeper hit
Bad Moms proved a modest success last year. While the picture scored mediocre critical ratings (note its
Metacritic rating of 42%), audiences largely welcomed the feature, as evinced by the film's
$72-million domestic gross on top of its estimated $28-million production budget.
A Bad Moms Christmas had an HD market share of 48% and sold 22% as many Blu-rays and 21% as many total units as
Wonder.
Finally, Warner Home Entertainment's
Batman: Gotham by Gaslight filled out the top-three spots on the Blu-ray-only sales list. An adaptation of the popular
Elseworlds story, this DTV effort - the latest from DCU Animated Studios - has found solid praise among animation fans. Blu-ray.com's own Michael Reuben
called Gotham by Gaslight full of "several impressive set pieces, including a battle atop a dirigible that fares about as well as the Hindenburg. But experiencing a version of Batman stripped to his essence is a novel twist in this world of ever-proliferating Dark Knight tales, and it's one of the chief pleasures of
Gotham by Gaslight. It reminds you of the qualities that first gave the character his appeal. Let's hope that future ventures into the Elseworld take similar advantage of such opportunities to rediscover beloved but now overly familiar comic book characters." On the Blu-ray-only chart,
Gotham by Gaslight had an HD market share of 64% and sold 15% as many Blu-rays as
Wonder. But on the overall package-media list, the film came in sixth place and sold 11% as many total units as the family dramedy.
