Blu-ray Sales, January 28-February 3: Blade Runner Competes Against Madea

For the week that ended on February 3rd, Warner Home Entertainment's Blade Runner 2049 stayed on top of the Blu-ray-only media chart. This long-anticipated follow-up to Ridley Scott's 1982 cult classic struggled to connect with viewers. Yes, the picture scored terrific critical plaudits (note its a Metacritic rating of 81%), but audiences largely didn't respond, as evinced by the film's $92-million domestic gross on top of its estimated $150-million production budget. This week, Blade Runner 2049 had a Blu-ray market share of 60%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only sales ranking was a Lionsgate title: the raucous melodrama Boo 2! A Madea Halloween. Once again, filmmaker Tyler Perry was able to connect with audiences despite a toxic critical reception. To say critics didn't like Boo 2! A Madea Halloween would be an understatement (it currently has a Metacritic score of 17%), yet the film went on to gross $48 million worldwide on top of its $25-million production budget. Regarding the Blu-ray-only list, the film had an HD market share of 24% and sold 97% as many Blu-rays as Blade Runner 2049. On the overall package-media ranking, Boo 2 came in first place, pushing the Blade Runner sequel to the second spot.

Finally, Warner and New Line's It filled out the top-three spots on the Blu-ray-only sales list. An R-rated adaptation of Stephen King's classic horror tome, It was a massive early-Fall success. The film garnered decent critical notices (a Metacritic rating of 69%) and then grossed over $700 million worldwide on top of its modest $35-million production budget. On the Blu-ray-only chart, It had an HD market share of 52% and sold 91% as many Blu-rays as Blade Runner 2049. But on the overall package-media list, the film came in second place and sold 43% as many total units as Boo 2.
