Blu-ray Sales, January 21-27: Blade Runner Holds Onto Number One

For the week that ended on January 27th, Warner Home Entertainment's Blade Runner 2049 kept its hold at the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. This long-anticipated follow-up to Ridley Scott's 1982 cult classic struggled to connect with viewers. Yes, the picture scored terrific critical plaudits (note its a Metacritic rating of 81%), but audiences largely didn't respond, as evinced by the film's $92-million domestic gross on top of its estimated $150-million production budget. This week, Blade Runner 2049 had a solid Blu-ray market share of 64%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only sales ranking was another Warner title: the WWII drama Dunkirk. Director Christopher Nolan's experimental war epic proved a smash hit with both critics and audiences. In addition to its worldwide box-office haul of over $525 million worldwide on top of its estimated $100-million production budget, the film garnered rapturous critical notices (a Metacritic rating of 94%), ultimately winning eight Academy Award nominations, including ones for Best Cinematopgraphy, Best Editing, Best Original Score, Best Director, and Best Picture. Regarding the Blu-ray-only list, the film had a strong HD market share of 78% and sold 98% as many Blu-rays as Blade Runner 2049. On the overall package-media ranking, Dunkirk came in fifth place and sold 81% as many total units as the Blade Runner sequel.

Finally, Geostorm filled out the top-three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. A disaster epic in the vein of The Day After Tomorrow or Deep Impact, Geostorm was not able to endure a torturous post-production schedule and rumors that included extensive reshoots and at leats one replacement director. The film scored terrible critical responses (a 21% score on Metacritic) and grossed $33 million domestically on top of its estimated $120-million production budget. Geostorm had an HD market share of 51% and sold 80% as many Blu-rays and almost the same exact amount of total units as Blade Runner 2049 sold.
