For the week that ended on January 20th, Warner Home Entertainment's Blade Runner 2049 premiered at the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. This long-anticipated follow-up to Ridley Scott's 1982 cult classic struggled to connect with viewers. Yes, the picture scored terrific critical plaudits (note its a Metacritic rating of 81%), but audiences largely didn't respond, as evinced by the film's $92-million domestic gross on top of its estimated $150-million production budget. This week, Blade Runner 2049 had a very solid Blu-ray market share of 76%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings was another Warner title: the horror hit It. An R-rated adaptation of Stephen King's classic horror tome, It was a massive early-Fall success. The film garnered decent critical notices (a Metacritic rating of 69%) and then grossed over $700 million worldwide on top of its modest $35-million production budget. It had an HD market share of 51% and sold 42% as many Blu-rays and 62% as many total units as Blade Runner 2049.

Finally, Universal Studios Home Entertainment's Happy Death Day filled out the top-three spots on the Blu-ray-only sales list. The darkly comic slasher movie - it plays like Groundhog Day with a serial killer - was a sleeper hit for its distributors. Despite a mediocre critical response (a 57% score on Metacritic), Happy Death Day grossed over $55 million domestically on top of its microbudget of $4.8-million. Regarding the Blu-ray-only list, the film had an HD market share of 54% and sold 11% as many Blu-rays as Blade Runner 2049. On the overall package-media ranking, the film came in fourth place (behind Universal's The Foreigner) and sold 15% as many total units as the Blade Runner sequel.
