Blu-ray Sales, December 10-16: Despicable Me Bests Kingsman and Thrones

For the week that ended on December 16th, Universal Studios Home Entertainment's Despicable Me 3 remained at the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. The third entry in the distributor's animated Despicable Me series, this film proved a massive global hit. Yes, the picture scored mediocre critical plaudits (a Metacritic rating of 49%), but audiences didn't care, supporting Despicable Me 3 to the tune of an over-$1-billion worldwide gross on top of its estimated $80-million production budget. This week, Despicable Me 3 had a solid Blu-ray market share of 63%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings was Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's Kingsman: The Golden Circle. The very R-rated follow-up to 2014's sleeper hit Kingsman: The Secret Service, The Golden Circle struggled to make the same impact as its predecessor. The film garnered unenthusiastic critical notices (a Metacritic rating of 44%) and then grossed just over $100 million domestically on top of its estimated $104-million production budget. The Golden Circle had a good HD market share of 67% and sold 86% as many Blu-rays and 80% as many total units as Despicable Me 3.

Finally, HBO Home Entertainment's Game of Thrones: The Complete Seventh Season filled out the top-three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. This dark fantasy - an adaptation of author George R. R. Martin's acclaimed A Song of Fire and Ice series - has been a hit for the network since its premiere in 2011, and the seventh season saw its popularity continue to rise. Game of Thrones had an HD market share of 54% and sold 50% as many Blu-rays as Despicable Me 3. On the overall package-media rankings, the series set sold 58% as many total units as the Despicable Me sequel.
